Conservation Training for Circulation Collections

Date: Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 2pm

Location:Zomm link will be send out two hours before training

Description

This training is a training for anyone who collects and sends circulation items to conservation.  This includes on-site library staff, cataloguing staff, subject specialists, etc.  This training is the same training as presented last year, with the addition of new Alma changes and how they relate to conservation.   This training will cover:

  • The steps to check whether an item should be sent to conservation or not.
  • How to spot different types of damage and know what types are fixable.
  • How to fill out the conservation request form.
  • How to handle researcher requests when an item is in conservation.
  • How to schedule the work order in Alma (and other Alma-related issues) and send items to conservation.

This training will also briefly cover stack maintenance.  The maintenance portion will be very brief as more training is forthcoming.  We will leave time at the end for a question and answer period.  Any conservation question related to the circulation collections is welcome.

Presenter:  Katie Smith is the conservator at the University of Florida.  She not only conserves the special collections here but also manages the lab and staff that handle the repairs for all of the libraries on campus.  Katie has a degree in bookbinding as well as a few degrees in conservation along with degrees in the humanities, comparative literature, and the arts.  She has worked in private and public conservation labs throughout her career, which included training positions where she taught staff preservation techniques.  She moved here almost four years ago as conservator.  While her specialty is books, she has experience with textile, object, and photo conservation as well.
